We’re Back! SpaceBass at Big Chill Bar – Sunday 1st Nov

26 10 2009

Hey rastas

We’re back at our spiritual home, the Big Chill Bar just off Brick Lane

Our last event with Diesel (X-Press 2 / Moton Records) was an absolute screamer – 6 hours of ridiculous bank holiday music shared with a party crowd that will be remembered for a long time… well, until we do our next party, which funnily enough is on Sunday 1st November

It’s a residents session at our favourite east-end venue, with a musical menu better than anything you’d see on Masterchef. Boogie to disco to deep house to shallow house to detroit to dalston to dubstep to funk. Old stuff, new stuff. Trust us, it will be proper.

Great Sunday food, a funny crowd sprinkled with the odd freak, and you’ve got a recipe for ACTION. Hope to see you there

New Mix – Strictly For My Ninjas vol 2

26 10 2009

Bit more digging into what I love the best…. cross genre business, mixed in one take, a bit erratic but basically that’s me. Spinning between the smoothness of Rodney Franklin’s ‘Felix Leo’ and Chaka Khan, to Mark E’s finest and then onto my re-edit of Mr Bumpman. Get’s a bit detroit in there for a bit, then ends a bit jazzy. You know the steez. Enjoy

MR BUMPMAN – re/edit bizniz

15 07 2009

Whenever you go listen to Theo Parrish dj, he plays this track only known as Mr Bumpman. It’s basically his own edit of a track by Jackie Beavers which came out in 1974 – and it’s unlikely he’ll ever release it.

So I had a go and messing about with the original (which is only about 3mins long. Used Ableton for the first time, only took me an hour and it’s rough – but I think it just about works. Lemme know what you think

Next Party.. at 93 Feet East, supporting the CDR crew

Branching out from their unique clubnight CDR, burntprogress curate a musical feast at 93 Feet East. On show some of the foremost musical talents in the London underground scene, the summer night offering live and deejayed delights that electronic and experimental forms.

Three live acts take up the main hall.

1) Super-charged duo PHANTOM combine hard-hitting drums with lyrical and sub-bass sensibilities from front-man Tic. Look out for their idiosyncratic covers policy where audiences get treated to one per show: previously tapping into the back catalogues of Prince, Kraftwerk and Santogold!

3) Finally, there’ll be special surprise guests headlining the night! Suffice to say this 7-piece band are gonna stun the audience with a modal scatter gun of sounds.

Segueing the live action, burntprogress honcho Tony Nwachukwu (NEPA Allstars/Attica Blues) and the independent label’s prize act, Soundspecies, will keep the crowd buzzing with their choice genre-crossing record selections.

Floatingpoints (Eglo Records) headlines the deejayed portion of the evening, joining his SpaceBass comrades in the Pink Bar. “Naha City Block Party

Greetings from the sub-tropical outpost of the Nippon motherland! Liam from Space Bass asked me to knock up a little funk and boogie blend; and that’s what I’ve put together, well almost ! Mixed live and raw from original vinyl on my Bozak rotary without the benefits (?) of EQ and FX, this is a one-time mix, unplanned with all the joy and serendipity of spontaneous selection. So there’s the odd bump and flam along the way.

Much as my heart belongs to jazz, I grew up dancing to music like this, which is why it’s been my pleasure to have been doing the Inspiration Information sessions for the last dozen years or so. The tunes range from the electro tinged Afrobeat of African Connexion and King Sunny Ade, through Larry Levan’s dub of Smokey to straight up boogie classics from Fresh Band and Pleasure, and not forgetting the Italian connection from Firefly the mighty Change ( Paradise is one of many written and arranged by the awesome team of producer Mauro Malavasi and bassist Davide Romani, BB+Q’s Starlette being another). There’s proto-house from Serious Intention, a little Jamaican funk from Richard Ace, and a wonderfully warped mélange of slap bass and heavy claps to start things rolling with The Pied Piper of Funkingham, dropping the tempo at the end for a fairly obscure 12’ only release from Lesette Wilson. Hope you enjoy!
