Mix! A REINFORCED Sound Episode 1 – Tribute to ‘The R’

24 12 2009

Reinforced Records mean a lot to me, and it’s fair to say, their pioneering sound shaped my current love of music and helped educate me about music of the past.

I won’t provide a long, detailed bio on the label – there’s plenty out there on the web, like this one: http://www.discogs.com/label/Reinforced+Records

However, it’s clear that the diverse jungle / drum and bass sounds they put out on (seriously loud) vinyl spawned many many imitators, founded more than one ‘scene’ and inspired / developed artists such as Seiji, Domu and countless others. And when I say ‘scenes’, I’m referring to them being the grand-daddys of the drum and bass era, and also the catalyst for the nu-jazz / broken beat movement. It’s easy to overlook the influence Reinforced had on the music we love today, but just take a look at their discography and you’ll know how far they reached

I’ve been meaning to do these mixes for a while – well, I actually did a series of Reinforced compilations but they’re somewhere at home on D90 tapes! biggrin.gif
I’m not going to include every single track in this new series of mixes, but I will be going across the collection from 1993 thru to 2004

Enjoy and feedback welcome!

“Naha City Block Party

Greetings from the sub-tropical outpost of the Nippon motherland! Liam from Space Bass asked me to knock up a little funk and boogie blend; and that’s what I’ve put together, well almost ! Mixed live and raw from original vinyl on my Bozak rotary without the benefits (?) of EQ and FX, this is a one-time mix, unplanned with all the joy and serendipity of spontaneous selection. So there’s the odd bump and flam along the way.

Much as my heart belongs to jazz, I grew up dancing to music like this, which is why it’s been my pleasure to have been doing the Inspiration Information sessions for the last dozen years or so. The tunes range from the electro tinged Afrobeat of African Connexion and King Sunny Ade, through Larry Levan’s dub of Smokey to straight up boogie classics from Fresh Band and Pleasure, and not forgetting the Italian connection from Firefly the mighty Change ( Paradise is one of many written and arranged by the awesome team of producer Mauro Malavasi and bassist Davide Romani, BB+Q’s Starlette being another). There’s proto-house from Serious Intention, a little Jamaican funk from Richard Ace, and a wonderfully warped mélange of slap bass and heavy claps to start things rolling with The Pied Piper of Funkingham, dropping the tempo at the end for a fairly obscure 12’ only release from Lesette Wilson. Hope you enjoy!
